Congratulations to Col. Shane Reeves & Col. Winston Williams on their respective new appointments as Dean of the U.S. Military Academy and Head of the Law Department at West Point

Professor Sean Watts has made the following information available to the members of the LACMO Network. I am happy to pass this news on to all our members and join him in extending our congratulations to both Col. Reeves and Col. Williams:

I am extraordinarily pleased to share the news that my Co-Director at the Lieber Institute, COL Shane R. Reeves, has been nominated for appointment to Brigadier General and will serve as the United States Military Academy’s next Dean of the Academic Board.

Shane’s selection as the 15th Dean of the United States Military Academy is a testament to his distinguished academic record, exceptional military leadership, and unwavering commitment to the education of the Army’s future leaders. He is the founder of the Lieber Institute and was the first Editor-in-Chief of Articles of War. At the Lieber Institute, Shane worked tirelessly to promote its mission of fostering a deeper understanding of the complex and evolving relationship between law and warfare and ensuring the law’s relevance in contemporary conflict. His appointment as Dean reflects an investment of trust in one of the Army’s most imaginative and dynamic officers and one of the nation’s most gifted leaders.

I am further pleased to announce the selection of COL Winston S. Williams to serve as Professor and Head of the Department of Law at West Point. Winston will additionally assume duties as the Co-Director of the Lieber Institute and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Articles of War. He previously served as the Deputy Head of the Department of Law and Managing Editor of the Lieber Studies published by Oxford University Press.

You may know Winston by now. He has taught law at the United States Military Academy since 2014. His selection as the 25th Head of the Department of Law is indicative of the tremendous respect and esteem with which he is regarded by both the faculty and cadets at West Point. His leadership of the Department of Law and the Lieber Institute will ensure future Army leaders are prepared to confront the complexities of contemporary warfare mindful of their obligations under the law of armed conflict.

I hope you will join me in congratulating our leaders on their selections. I also hope you will share this exciting news with your team.

Sean
