Call for Papers: Conference on ‘Dynamics and Legal Challenges in Armed Conflict in the DRC’

The South African Research Chair in International Law at the University of Johannesburg, the
Centre for International and Operational Law of the Swedish Defence University, and the
Essex Armed Conflict and Crisis Hub of the School of Law, University of Essex will host a
Conference on the ‘Dynamics and Legal Challenges in Armed Conflict in the DRC’. The
conference will take place at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa from 2 to 3 April
2020.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is among the states that have experienced the
greatest devastation, as a result of multiple armed conflicts, in the post-World War II era. The
organizers welcome submissions of abstracts from scholars across relevant disciplines that
engage with the dynamics and legal challenges related to the armed conflict situation in the
DRC. Papers should engage with the following panel themes:

  • Dynamics and Drivers of Conflict in the DRC
  • Actors in the Conflict in the DRC
  • Conflict Classification in the DRC
  • Contested Legal Issues
  • Compliance and accountability
  • Towards Sustainable Peace

Abstracts of no more than 500 words should be submitted to Dr Martie Bradley at mmbradley@outlook.com. The deadline for submissions is 15 December 2019. Please include a short biography with your submission. Successful applicants will be informed by 15 January 2020.
